The Stump Quote That Changed Halfway Through
If you have had a stump ground out here before, there is a decent chance the job did not finish the way it was sold. Somebody quoted a depth over the phone, got four or five inches down, hit rock, and then either stopped short or asked for more money.
That is not bad faith so much as bad homework. Turners Point was built on old pasture between 2001 and 2006, and the topsoil across a lot of it is thin over chert. A stump that would be a routine forty minutes on creek-bottom ground can turn into a genuinely different job here once the wheel finds stone.
What you are left with is the practical problem: a spot you cannot re-sod properly, a fence post that will not go where you wanted it, and a shallow patch of wood that keeps sinking.
Pasture Ground With Rock Under the Stumps
This is the newest full subdivision in Millersville, and the ground it sits on was open farmland before that. Farmland on this side of town means a shallow soil profile over chert — hard, brittle, irregular stone that does not lie in a neat layer you can predict from the road.
Rock and a carbide tooth are a bad combination. Teeth chip, the cut slows, and pushing through does more damage to the machine than it does to the stone. There is no technique that makes rock grind like wood, so the only honest approach is to find out where it is first.
On the Greenleaf Circle and Holloway Court side we have generally found workable depth. Out along Turners Bend it varies lot to lot, sometimes within the same yard.
We Call the Depth Before We Quote It
Standard practice on a lawn stump is six to twelve inches under the surface, deeper if a slab, a drive, or a post is going in over it. Here we treat that as a target rather than a promise until we have probed.
Probing takes a few minutes with a bar and it tells us whether we are working in soil or negotiating with stone. If rock is at five inches, we say so on the spot and give you two options: take it to the depth the ground allows at a lower price, or go deeper in a defined area with the understanding that it costs more and takes longer. What we will not do is quote twelve inches, deliver five, and invoice for twelve.
For a plain re-sod, five or six inches is usually plenty. It is fence posts and footings that force the harder conversation.
Robertson County Side, Goodlettsville Mail
Turners Bend geocodes to Robertson County even though it is inside Millersville city limits, and the mail still comes addressed to Goodlettsville 37072. Three names for one place is the local normal, and people searching for a contractor sometimes cannot work out which one to type.
For grinding a stump it makes no difference at all — same crew, same rates, same schedule as the Sumner side of town. Where it does start to matter is what comes after. If the reason the stump is going is a garage addition, a driveway extension, or a detached shop, the permit office you deal with follows the county line, and that line runs through the middle of Millersville rather than around it.

What happens if you hit rock partway through my stump?
We stop, show you, and re-price on the spot. You will not get an invoice for a depth we did not reach. Usually there is still a good outcome available: take it as deep as the ground allows, fill, and sod. If you need the full depth for a structural reason, we will talk through what that costs before continuing rather than after.
I want to put a fence post exactly where the tree was. Can you get deep enough?
That is the question to ask before booking rather than on the day. A post hole wants clear ground well past normal grinding depth, and on some Turners Bend lots the stone will not allow it. Our usual advice is to shift the post a foot to one side if the fence line permits; it is far cheaper than fighting rock.
Does being in Robertson County change anything about the job or the price?
Nothing on our end. The county line runs right through Millersville and we work both sides at the same rates and the same schedule. It matters for permits and for the property records office if you are building something afterward, and it is why some of your neighbors are technically in Sumner while you are not.
The subdivision is only about twenty years old. Why are trees already coming out?
Because of what was planted. The 2001 to 2006 build-out leaned on Callery pear and fast red maple, and both start failing structurally in their third decade. Add the loblolly pine left over from the farm edge, which was never meant to stand alone in a lawn, and this is roughly the age when a subdivision starts losing trees in numbers.
How long is the drive from you, really?
About nine minutes from the middle of town, which makes it the far corner of our own city. It has no effect on the price. It does mean we like to load for a full day out here rather than making two trips, so if a neighbor also needs work done, mention it and we will do both.
