Every Stump Out Here Is a One-Way-In Job

These lanes were not platted all at once and they were not built for service trucks. Houses went in lot by lot from the seventies onward, the road followed the buildable ground, and it stops where the last house is. There is no cul-de-sac bulb at the end, no shoulder wide enough to swing on, and in places barely enough width for two cars to pass.

So the thing keeping your stump in the ground is often not cost. It is that the last contractor who came out took one look down the lane and decided against it, or got in and then spent twenty minutes reversing a trailer past your mailbox.

Meanwhile the stump is a mature oak or hickory, not a builder's Callery pear, and it is not going to rot away on any timescale that helps you.

Sassafras, Oak and Hickory Cut Nothing Alike

The road is named for a tree that is actually here, and sassafras is the pleasant one to grind: soft, light, aromatic enough that you will smell root beer for an hour afterward. It goes quickly and it does not fight back.

White oak is the workhorse problem. Dense, wide at the base, and slow to feed, and the older ones along the fence lines have grown around whatever was there when they were young. Shagbark hickory is harder still on teeth than the oak beside it, so a hickory stump gets more time on the quote than its diameter suggests. Tulip poplar goes fast and produces a startling volume of shavings for the time spent.

Custom Builds Mean Nothing Is Standard
