How Pasture Turns Into Scrub in the First Place
It doesn't take long. Stop mowing or grazing a field around Millersville for three or four seasons and eastern red cedar starts coming up first, since it tolerates the thin, dry patches better than most volunteer growth. Hackberry follows close behind on any spot with a bit more moisture, growing fast and weak the way it always does. By year five or six, what used to be open pasture has a scattered stand of young trees thick enough that walking through it means ducking branches, and by year ten some of those trees have trunks a foot across.
We get called into that situation regularly - a property owner who bought acreage with the intention of running cattle or hay again, and the first real obstacle is a field that's reverted most of the way back to scrub.
Where Grinding Fits and Where It Doesn't
We only handle what's left once the standing trees are down - the stumps and root mass, ground below grade so equipment or a bush hog can run over that spot again without hitting a hazard. Felling the actual trees, hauling brush, and grading the field back to something plantable are separate jobs handled by a land-clearing crew or a tree service, and we're upfront that we don't do that part.
Where we come in is after the cutting's done. A field with fifteen or twenty stumps left standing in it after the trees came down is exactly the kind of job we price as a group rather than one at a time, and it's usually a bigger undertaking than the stump count alone suggests once you factor in walking equipment across uneven, previously-untended ground.
Sequencing the Work So It Actually Gets Done
The order matters. Trees come down first, then stumps get ground, then whatever grading or seeding comes after that happens on cleared, stump-free ground rather than around obstacles. We've had jobs where a customer wanted us to grind stumps in sections as trees came down over several weeks rather than waiting for the whole field to be cleared at once, and that works fine too - it just means a couple of shorter visits instead of one long one.
What doesn't work well is grading or seeding before the stumps are out, since equipment working around a stump that's still there tends to just push soil and debris up against it rather than leveling the ground properly.
What to Expect Once the Stumps Are Gone
Ground stumps leave holes that settle over the following weeks as the loose material underneath compacts, so we recommend waiting before seeding directly over a fresh grind if the plan is pasture grass rather than something with a shallower root system. On a field-scale job, we'll walk through with you what's been done and flag any spots where roots ran deeper than expected or the ground still needs a bit more fill before it's truly level.
